PROJECT DESCRIPTION
IDEATION
I have always liked old objects and classic cars (I own a 1967 Mini Morris), the forms, the colors, the materials, and the smell. I realized that most car and motorbike enthusiasts would like to have their favorite classic vehicle in their living room, and if not the complete vehicle, at least some part of it. From the idea of using a beautiful 1962 Porsche 365-B steering wheel bought on eBay Germany as a home decoration piece and the nostalgic lifestyle around classic cars, I started to explore the different design possibilities (lamps, tables, chairs, etc). This mind map shows that thinking process together with inspiration references from classic icons from the 60s like Jaguar Type-D, Porsche 356, AC-Cobra 427, and Steve McQueen.
CONCEPT sketch
Focusing on the idea to build a lamp from the Porsche 356-B steering wheel, I started to define the required parts keeping in mind that must be found easily in any hardware store for everyone (DIY). Simplicity was crucial as well as maintaining coherently the nostalgic spirit supported by the steering wheel’s materials and form. New elements must serve and integrate highlighting the main element.
FINAL DESIGN
The huge OSRAM soft light bulb (T8 68 230V 100W) together with turning the light regulator down, provides a warm light transporting the mind to the past.
