GOAL: Design a toy to help overcome a child’s fear of darkness and loneliness.
SOLUTION: An egg with an embryo inside that with interactivity through sight, hearing, and touch senses helps children overcome their fears, builds a link towards responsibility, and develop memory and cognitive perception capabilities through games.
COLLABORATION: 3ds Max renders done in collaboration with Jorge Rodriguez.

IDEATION

This mind map explores the different connections around emotions like fear and ways to help children overcome it through sensorial stimuli. Remembering my childhood and the attraction I felt for mysteries, I searched for sources of inspiration like chrysalis, dinosaurs, or the gremlins that helped me to better understand the importance of mystery of life. Therefore, an egg seemed the perfect form for this project. The mystery of life at its best as what happens inside cannot be seen. Other references came from Pokemon, Tamagotchi, Simon, and Rubbik because interaction they offer, and applications when fear is not present offering games played doing exercise in order to recharge the device (obesity) or memory training through light and vibration sequence repetitions.

CONCEPT sketches

Further analysis defining internal shell for electronics and sensorial mechanisms (LEDs, vibration, accelerometer, and tachometer), as well as the dock station to recharge the egg and use it as a lamp during night. Different embryos provide differentiation based on form, color, and different sets of interactivity that can be discovered when joining other eggs (like secret powers to be unveiled). This group concept provides different physical exercise games (the more you do with your egg, the more you will be able to do).

USABILITY & UTILITIES

Detailed utilities and their use, where simplicity of use is key so children can play with the different functionalities. Some functionality is more adult focused to cover more mature targets that can see in this device a new gadget to have around their workspace. Interaction with other devices like cell phones, computers, mp3 players is wireless (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi), and also can be done through the USB 2.0 dock station. The materials must perform in all environments, including water. Every EGGO needs to be synched with user’s biorhythm signals in order to begin its life linked to the user’s (this is critical to detect your mood and interact with its user accordingly).
